Want to hire freelance Perl developers on your own? Here are the skills you must look for while hiring the best freelance Perl developer

Hiring freelance Perl developers might be a complicated task for you if you are a non-technical manager. Perl is a high-level programming language and is used widely in text-manipulation and easily generates reports from various text-files. Also, Perl has the ability to convert the text-files from one format to another. But, hiring the best freelance Perl developers among thousands of freelance Perl developers is a challenging task for anyone. So, Ultragenius is here to assist you while hiring the top talented freelance Perl  developers on your own.

The following skills you must ensure while hiring a freelance Perl developer –

Steadfast knowledge of Perl Scalars

Perl Scalar is a variable that stores one unit of data at a time. The data can be of the different variable types including a character, a string, a floating point number, an integer number, a paragraph, or it can be an entire web page also. If the freelance Perl developer is using a string with a string scalar, the string scalar if put inside double quotes will only print output with the value of string scalar.

For example, $var  = “Welcome to UltraGenius!!!”;

$single = ‘This statement is inside a single quote – $var’;

$double = “This statement is inside double quotes – $var”;

print “single  = $single\n”; Output – This statement is inside a single quote – $var

print “double = $double\n”; Output – This statement is inside double quotes – Welcome to UltraGenius!!!.

Experience writing code in Perl and knowledge of CGI

The freelance Perl developer must have experience writing Perl code. The developer must know special literals like – __FILE__, __LINE__, and __PACKAGE__, array and array slices, the methods associated with the arrays like push, pop, shift, and unshift. The freelance Perl developers must know about creating GUIs efficiently, designing Common Gateway Interfaces (CGI), and retrieving information from different text-format files.

Knowledge of different data types

There are three types of data types available in Perl – Scalars, Arrays, and Hashes (Associative Arrays).

  • Scalars – Scalars stores a single data unit at a time. The data can be a string, a char, an integer, or a floating-point number. Multiple operations like addition, subtraction, division, multiplication, etc. can be performed on Scalars.
  • Arrays – An array is a list data type which stores homogeneous elements.
  • Hashes – Hashes are also known as Associative arrays. Hashes stores the data in the form of key-value pair. For accessing values from Hashes, freelance Perl developers can followed by {}.

Knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming concepts

Perl is an Object-Oriented Programming Language. Therefore, the freelance Perl developer must know about the four pillars of OOPS including Encapsulation, Inheritance, Abstraction, and Polymorphism.
Encapsulation – Encapsulation bundles the data along with member functions that operate on the data. It binds the data into a single unit.
Inheritance – Inheritance is the mechanism by which a class can extend the functionality of another class. Inheritance gives the freelance Perl developer an advantage to reuse the same code.
Abstraction – Abstraction enables data-hiding by showing the user only the necessary details and hiding the implementation details.
Polymorphism –
Polymorphism is the ability of a function to take many forms. Polymorphism is of two types – Compile-time Polymorphism and Run-time Polymorphism. In Compile-time Polymorphism, the invoking method is decided by the type or number of arguments if there are multiple methods present with the same name. Run-time Polymorphism is achieved through Method Overriding. The child class provides the specific implementation of the parent class and the method invoked is decided at the run-time.

Experienced working with code versioning tools like Git, SVN, TFS

Freelance perl developers must have a very good knowledge of version control systems, like Git, SVN, TFS, and Mercurial. Mostly, developers use Git for their work. It is the version control system that helps the team in collaborating and organizing your code, maintain the frequent changes that occur in the code. Git helps in reviewing the old codes and compares them with the newly updated code, pulling the code from their repository, and managing the commit history.

Along with this, the freelance Perl developer must know how to use add, push, pull, and commit commands, how to do  branching, and merging as it allows developers in different field to work independently on the code.

Strong understanding of data structures and algorithms

Knowledge of data structures and algorithms enables a freelancePerl developer write meaningful and concise code. You must ensure that the Perl developer freelancer you are hiring must know about popular algorithms like merge sort, quick sort, insertion sort, selection sort, their time-complexities, binary-search, binary trees, binary search trees, etc.

Knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript

Perl is used to design Graphical User Interfaces andGateway Interfaces for the web applications. Perl is a web-friendly language and can be embedded into servers to design dynamic web pages with increased processing power. Perl also has DBI package which helps freelance Perl developers integrate the web pages with a database very easily. Perl is compatible with HTML, CSS, and Javascript.  The freelance Perl developers must have basic knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Hands-on experience with databases like MySQL, Sybase, Oracle Server, etc

Perl provides excellent support working with databases like MySQL, SQL server, Oracle Server, Sybase, MongoDB, etc. The freelance Perl developer must have experience developing applications with databases, must know about database connectivity, database packages, etc. Perl also supports NoSQL (Not only SQL) databases. The freelance Perl developer must know about SQL commands such as Data Definition Language (DDL), Data Manipulation Language (DML), Transaction Control Language (TCL), Data Querying Language (DQL), etc.

Knowledge of DBI module

Using Perl, freelance Perl developers can create robust web applications connecting them with a database. Perl provides a wide range of database format and an excellent support for creating GUIs. For querying and connecting the user interface with the database, Perl contains a database interface module called DBI. DBI communicates with the web server to use Structured Query Language (SQL) to get data from the database.

Excellent Problem-Solving Skills

The freelance Perl developer must have a strong problem solving skill because it helps developers to utilize existing solutions for the projects more efficiently, thinking abstractly, and enables them to write pseudocode for their project. The freelance Perl developer must know how to debug the code as well. Also, check if the freelance Perl developer is able to write clean and concise code so that other team members can understand it easily.

Perl stands for Practical Extraction and Reporting Language and is a high-level scripting language used for developing Common Gateway Interface (CGI) for the web applications and manipulating text up to a very high extent through which it can generate reports easily extracting different text files. Perl supports both procedural and object-oriented paradigm of programming. But, recruiting the top talented freelance Perl developers among thousands of developers is a difficult task when there is a huge competition among developers to grab the job opportunities.

Top Interview Questions to ask while hiring a freelance Perl developer

Perl stands for Practical Extension and Reporting Language. Perl was originally developed for text manipulation and string analysis. Perl is widely used for processing text, extracting the information from a variety of text-formats and generate reports, and also for database connectivity and querying. Perl supports both Procedural and Object-Oriented programming. Perl also provides support for socket capabilities.

  • Perl provides an excellent interface called DBI which communicates with the database to fetch data using SQL queries.
  • Perl-based web servers are used with limited resources systems
  • Perl provides support to interact easily with Google Cloud's speech APIs and is widely used in speech recognition.
  • Perl is greatly used for text manipulation and string analysis. Perl is the goto language for HTML parsing, JSON  manipulation, regex, etc.
  • Perl is used for screen reading, enabling multi-tasking possibilites.
  •

$_ is a special variable used in Perl, which has the default-input and pattern-searching string. While $@ represents az type of erro. $@ is set if the string to be evaluated didn't compile or if the Perl code which is to be executed die(). In such cases, the error is the argument to die or a compile-time error.

Perl's shift() function returns the array's first element value, removes it, and shifts all the array elements to the left by one position. shift() removes the element just like the pop() function in array but instead of removing the first element from the end, it removes the first element from the start.

Perl's unshift() function shifts multiple values of an array by right position and places a given array list elements at the beginning of that array. The unshift() function returns the total number of new elements in the array.

For example,

@array = (10,20,30,40,50);

print "Original array : @array\n";

print "Total no. of elements after unshift() function is applied : ", unshift(@array, 70, 80, "UltraGenius");

print "\nUpdated array : @array\n";

The output of the above code is -

Original array : 10 20 30 40 50

Total no. of elements after unshift() function is applied : 8

Updated array : 70 80 UltraGenius 10 20 30 40 50

The chop() function removes the last character from the input string. For example, $string = "Welcome to UltraGenius!!!";

@chopped = chop($string);

print " $string\n";

print "@chopped";

The output of the program will be -

Welcome to UltraGenius!!

!

While the chomp() function removes the last trailing newline from the input string.

Quantifiers are used in regular expressions to determine how many times a given character is repeated before pattern  matching is completed. There are six different types of quantifiers which are used in regular expressions -

  • + - It tells a component is present one or more times in a regular expression.
  • * - It tells a component is present zero or more times in a regular expression.
  • ? - It tells a component must be present zero or one time in a regular expression.
  • {n} - It tells that a component must be present n times in a regular expression.
  • {n, } - It tells that a component must be present at least n times in a regular expression.
  • {n,m} - It tells that a component must be present at least n times but not more than m times in  a regular expression.

The Special Character Classes in Perl are -

  • Digit Character\d - The \d indicates the digit character class matches any digit present in the regex to [0-9].
  • PO Six Character Classes - PO Six Character Classes defines an application programming interface (API) with command line interfaces and utility interfaces. The PO Six has the format of [:class:], where [: , :] are the delimiters and class is any group of characters like alpha, ascii, blank, alnum, lower, digit, punct, cntrl, graph, etc.
  • Word Character \w - The Word Character Classes is represented by \w and is used for matching any alpha-numeric character and underscore [A - Z, a - z, 0 - 9, _].
  • Whitespace Character Class \s - The \s belongs to Whitespace character class and used to match a single character - whitespace. It will also match the \t (horizontal tab), \n (the newline), \f (form feed), \r (carriage return), and the space.
  •  Negated Character Classes (\D, \W, \S ) - The negated character class \D [^\d] indicates non-digit character, \W [^\w] matches any non-word character, and \S [^\s] matches any non-whitespace character.
  • Encapsulation – Encapsulation is binding the data members and functions that expose only the functions in the class and hide the private members.

It is an important concept used widely in software development and helps reduce software complexity, protect the internal state of an object as accessing the variables/members is possible through getter and setter methods. Also, the implementation inside methods can be changed without breaking the code which is using that class.

  • Inheritance – Inheritance is a real-time demand of every code which allows one class to extend the functionality of another class. The core feature of Inheritance is Re-usability. The class inheriting the class is called the child class or subclass and the class that is being inherited is called parent class or superclass. Instead of thousands of lines of code every time, developers can utilize the same code in inheriting classes as well.

  • Abstraction – Abstraction is the process of defining the core functionalities of any class, hiding its implementation details. It tells what a class does instead of how it does. Here, you can ask the difference between Encapsulation and Abstraction, the former shows the inner implementation, and the latter shows the outer implementation. For example, take the example of a mobile phone, Encapsulation is how the display screen and keypad button are connected using circuits while Abstraction is any user can dial a number using the display screen and keypad button.

  • Polymorphism – Polymorphism is the ability of any data to take more than one form. It is of two types – Compile-time Polymorphism and Run-time Polymorphism.
    In compile-time polymorphism, function overloading is implemented in which one function with the same name can have a different number of arguments and different return types.
    In run-time polymorphism, function overriding is implemented in which the child class / sub-class decides the implementation of the parent class / base-class function.
